PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (or PUBG as it is commonly known) has spearheaded the popularity of battle royale games. It was a success that inspired countless competitors like Fortnite and Apex Legends, but it remains one of the most played games on Steam and Xbox Live.
Unlike its rivals, PUBG is a more simulation-driven business, with weapons and real-world physics to consider, such as bullet drops and variable weather conditions. If you’ve been put off by Fortnite’s wacky art style or the relentlessly fast-paced gameplay of Call of Duty: Warzone, PUBG is worth checking out – it’s on Xbox Game Pass too.
From its meteoric rise from a Steam Early Access title to securing the most concurrent players on Steam in 2018, PUBG has made its way to PS4, Xbox One, Stadia, Android, and iOS. There’s also PUBG Lite, a free adaptation of the game that can run on less capable hardware, like laptops. PUBG also receives regular updates, adding new content, features, and perhaps predictably many annoying bug fixes.
Where are we going to fall?
Well, if you have ever seen the cult movie Battle Royale, you must understand the basic idea. 100 players fall on a desert island and quickly collect loot. You’ll need to find armor, weapons, and healing items, then do whatever it takes to survive until you’re the last man standing.
To make things more interesting, you will have to move to a smaller and smaller area that appears randomly on the map, by land, air, or sea. If you are caught out of the area, you will take damage gradually, which will increase dramatically as the game progresses. Pro tip: don’t get caught out of the zone.
If you manage to survive to the end, you will see the coveted phrase “Winner Winner Chicken Dinner” on the screen. And due to the overwhelming odds against them in each game, you’ll probably want to take a screenshot as they don’t come very often, which makes them taste even sweeter.
Although the game is now available on multiple platforms, PUBG continues to evolve with the addition of new maps, survivor passes, and player modes. We’ll show you what’s new, why it’s important, and what’s in store for the future of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
